An exceptional result in terms of agility, smoothness of operation, consumption figures and emissions has been achieved by the Mercedes-Benz engineers with the new-concept 4-cylinder diesel powerplant with three output levels.

The engines are significantly stronger, yet at the same time thriftier and cleaner than their preceding models. In order to achieve this, technologies from the BlueEFFICIENCY package of measures were composed for each model individually, so as to attain the greatest possible environmental compatibility. Through the use of further improved common-rail injection systems with injection pressures of up to 2000 bar, high-precision piezo-injectors that enable a particularly rapid and precise dosage of the injected fuel, as well as a new turbocharger concept, the output of the BlueEFFICIENCY powerplants is up to 20 percent higher, while the torque has been increased by as much as 25 percent. At the same time, it was possible to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by as much as 23% compared with the previous models. Newly-developed ceramic fast glowplugs improve the cold running behaviour, while two Lanchester balancer shafts enhance smoothness of operation, enabling the highest degree of ride comfort.

The E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY delivers a torque of 360 Nm, for the E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY it is 400 Nm, and for the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY it is an enormous 500 Nm at a consumption of only approx. 5.3 l/100 km (manual transmission).

Impressive features of the 6-cylinder diesel engines are their smooth running characteristics and low consumption and emission figures. You can choose between the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the E 350 BlueTEC, currently "the cleanest diesel in the world" and the E 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with permanent all-wheel drive. The CDI and CDI 4MATIC comply with the EU5 emissions standard and the BlueTEC model with urea injection even meets the future EU6 emissions standard. This clean, efficient, power delivery is thanks to Mercedes-Benz's second-generation direct petrol injection process, which involves spray-guided combustion and high-pressure injection via piezo injectors. In addition, a particulate filter reduces soot emissions.
